Wide range of applications with re-bar

The re-bar strengthening solution can be used for various applications in industrial, building and bridge construction. Static reinforcements are required in the event of changes in utilization or the static system (removal of supports or columns, ceiling cut-outs), to increase the load-carrying g capacity or to extend the service life. Thanks to the prestressing, the structure is actively relieved and does not have to deform further in order to «activate» the reinforcement measure.

Strengthening of concrete structures

Bending reinforcement of slabs (overhead)

re-bar is fixed to the roughened substrate using sprayed mortar. The new mortar replaces the old, damaged and possibly carbonated concrete layer and also serves as a new alkali deposit. The reinforcement work can be integrated into measures that are necessary anyway.

Bending reinforcement of slabs (horizontal)

In grouting or reprofiling mortar: re-bar is applied either over the entire area or in milled grooves only. The active reinforcement of negative moments is used for balconies, industrial and private buildings, or bridge slabs.

The activation of re-bar is also possible with electrical resistive heating.

Bending reinforcement of girders

When strengthening concrete beams, the anchoring zone can be made more robust with stirrups. Like this, tensile forces are transferred to the concrete compression zone and the shear resistance is increased.

Shear strengthening of girders

The advantages of the easy-to-apply shear reinforcement in terms of serviceability are comparable to those of bending reinforcements. The release in stresses in the internal shear stirrups has been experimentally proven (see tests on T-beams).

Tensile reinforcement of walls and foundations

This type of reinforcement can be useful for high expansion forces and increasing cracks. re-bar is also used for new cut-outs or cantilevered concrete walls.

The combination with bent and glued-in end hooks is possible.

Increasing the punching shear resistance

For small deficits in punching shear resistance, re-bar can be used to increase the amount of negative bending reinforcement. The bars are designed with end hooks. The advantage of this solution is that the additional reinforcement is immediately active and has a similar stress level to the internal reinforcement. In addition, re-bar is very ductile.

Confinement/wrapping of silos

Prestressed confinements act radially against the water pressure. Thanks to the actively load-bearing re-bars, crack openings can be limited. The system also allows the forces to be evenly distributed and does not require large anchor heads.

Combination with fiber-reinforced composites

The memory®-steel strengthening solution should always be used where it has structural benefits, for instance to cover service loads. CFRP laminates or carbon fibre fabrics are subsequently used to cover the remaining gap to fulfil the load-carrying capacity (bending and shear) at ultimate load state.

For additional utilisation of all reinforcement systems, concrete structures can be relieved in advance with hydraulic presses.

Seismic strengthening of masonry

Vertical/diagonal reinforcement of masonry walls

The re-bar system provides a simple solution for the seismic reinforcement of masonry walls. The bars are placed vertically or diagonally into cut grooves and anchored in the neighbouring concrete slabs (floor/ceiling). The prestressing forces put the walls under controlled compression, which increases the shear and bending resistance in the event of an earthquake.

Simple anchoring solutions can also be found for thin concrete slabs. The measure has minimal space requirement (no anchor heads) and can be installed individually for each floor.

Retrofit of historical construction

Reinforcement of old stone walls

Inhomogeneous settlement or cracks often occur in stone walls of old buildings. re-bar can also be used to prevent further crack propagation. Damaged lime mortar joints can be repaired.

Bending reinforcement of hollow core slabs

In old buildings, filigree hollow-core slabs (e.g. cementitious Hourdis elements) can be found in many places. Their maintenance is extremely difficult. Under certain circumstances, reinforcements with re-bar and a reduced, controlled heat supply are feasible.

Flexural strengthening with re-plate

The re-plate System is used for bending reinforcement of slender concrete slabs in dry interior areas (industrial and building construction). Thanks to the prestressing, the building structure is relieved and does not have to deform further in order to «activate» the reinforcement measure. The deflection can be reduced. A corrosion coating (Sikaflex® PRO-3 Purform and Macropoxy® EG-1 Plus, formerly SikaCor® EG-1 Plus) is applied after installation and/or at the factory.

Bending reinforcement with fire protection

re-plate is suitable for flexural reinforcement. If the structure without strengthening measure is insufficient in the case of fire, re-plate must be protected. The cost-effective fire protection spray plaster SikaCem® Pyrocoat has been tested and approved for such applications. Comparatively thin layer thicknesses are required.

Combination with fiber-reinforced composites

The memory®-steel strengthening solution is actively load bearing already under constant service loads. Remaining ultimate bending moments can also be covered with conventional CFRP strips. Together with the fire protection SikaCem® Pyrocoat, economical solutions can be found.
