Punching reinforcement in commercial building Migros, Erlenbach Switzerland

Erlenbach, Switzerland

Description
The concrete ceiling of an office building was to be refurbished and upgraded for new live loads. Tecnotest AG carried out material analyses (reinforcing steel and concrete) in advance to obtain information about the static load-bearing capacities.

Two concrete columns on the 3rd floor showed slight deficits in the negative bending area. re-bars were added in one direction to fulfil the punching shear resistance of the column. The bars were inserted in cut grooves without damaging the existing reinforcement. End hooks on re-bar were drilled in and glued. A mortar bed is created over a length of around 100 mm as heat protection and support. The bars are then heated with a gas burner and prestressed so that they can then be fully embedded in grout.

Advantages:

  • High ductility of the additional reinforcement
  • Active tensile reinforcement (after activation at a similar stress level like the existing reinforcement)
  • Easy to apply reinforcement with prestressing; without complex tensioning equipment (presses) and anchor heads
  • Recyclable material, re-bar can be 100% reintroduced into the steel production cycle
  • High situational adaptability of the reinforcement system
