Seismic strengthening of masonry walls in a school building
Description
As part of the structural work to take up the earthquake load case “insufficient shear resistance of the masonry walls in its initial phase”, masonry walls in the primary school of Sembrancher in Switzerland (VS) were reinforced. In order to achieve vertical prestressing on the walls, re-bar 16 were placed in grooves previously cut over the entire height of each level concerned. To anchor these re-bars 16, holes were made in the slabs at the foot of the wall and at the top. The anchoring in the slabs is then carried out with a cementitious grout such as SikaGrout®-311 or Sika AnchorFix®-3030. Prestressing is activated by means of a gas torch with temperature control at regular intervals. After the work has been completed, the groove is closed with a mortar of type Sika MonoTop®-412 Eco on the free length between the anchorage areas. This method of structural reinforcement is particularly interesting, as it offers the possibility of simple and effective prestressing with a ductile reinforcement without the need for any hydraulic equipment. The structural reinforcement is finally completely embedded in the wall and both adjoining slabs.
